Trail Report

March 24, 2012:

Since a good number of us have already dusted off the golf clubs, cut their grass once or twice, and thought about dropping a boat in the water, I think it goes without saying that the trails are officially closed in the park and have been for about two weeks now. A big thanks goes out to all of the volunteers who helped to make the most of this short season. Also a big thanks to Manitoba Conservation for working tirelessly to ensure that the trails stayed groomed for the couple weeks we had snow.

Thanks to all who attended and volunteered for our second annual poker derby. With more than twice the participants as last year, I think it's safe to say it was a great success. For those of you who responded early enough to get a team in for our curling bonspiel, see you next weekend. If you weren't so lucky (and even if you were), keep your calendars open for our golf tournament at Granite Hills on August 17. It's guaranteed to be a great time again so check up on the website in the coming months for updates.

February 24, 2012:

Well would you look at that, it snowed finally. Hopefully everyone is able to take advantage of this white stuff while it sticks around. One way of doing that is to join us on our second annual Poker Derby next Saturday, March 3 at Brereton Lake Resort. First prize is $750 with some other great prizes being awarded to the runner-ups. Please click the flyer below to see the route, or visit the Events page for the contact information should you have any questions about the derby.

The snowmobile club will also be participating in an open house with Manitoba Conservation, Water Stewardship, and the Whiteshell Trappers Association at the Alfred Hole Goose Sanctuary just outside Rennie on Saturday, March 10. For more information, please click here as it offers an excellent opportunity to check out some of the grooming equipment utilized in the park.

Finally in other news, our very own Kris Mutcher was featured in an article published by Snow Riders West. Great job Kris and lets hope that everyone makes an effort to introduce new people to this great sport.

February 16, 2012:

Well its the Friday of a long weekend and I'm sure everyone has tunnel vision on getting out to the lake. Please ride safe this weekend with the increased traffic due to Beaver Days. Today also marks the start of the 6th annual Pam's Rum Runners 'Ride for the Cure'. For the next two days these fantastic women will be putting on a couple hundred miles while raising money for Cancer-Care Manitoba. For more information and directions on how to donate to this great cause, please follow the link.

As snowmobile technology is continually evolving, we feel that we should be doing the same. Therefore, the Whiteshell Snowmobile Club has joined Facebook. To share pictures, stories, or just chat with other club members, please sign-up now.

February 3, 2012:

Once again, Mother Nature has shown us some sympathy and teased us with some more snow. Thankfully, this latest weather has been enough for us to open the Big Whiteshell and Beauchemin trails. As always, please ride safe and be aware that with the low snowfall levels, there are a higher number of exposed rocks and sticks along the trail than usual. For up-to-date trail conditions, please visit Snoman's trail condition site here.

The club is looking forward to hosting a lunch ride to Pinewood Lodge at Dorothy lake on Saturday, February 11. At approximately 1:00 pm, Pinewood Lodge will be putting on a fabulous Chinese food buffet. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to Pat Ledingham at 348-2278, 471-4407, or pled@mymts.net by the evening of February 6. We look forward to seeing you on the ride.

January 27, 2012:

With great pleasure I can finally say that winter is finally here. As of today, the main trail from Falcon to Seven Sisters is officially open, along with the Elma trail. All other trails will remain closed at this time due to insufficient snow conditions. Please ride safe and have a great weekend.

January 10, 2012:

First of all, Happy New Year and sorry for the inconvenience of the website being down for so long. A special thanks and job well done are in order for Kevin Boughton who concluded his two year term as President of the Whiteshell Snowmobile Club at the AGM this November. Taking over as President this year is Kris Mutcher from Red Rock Lake. Also new to the Executive this year are myself, Brian Milne as President-Elect, and Randy Williams as Vice-President; both of us from Big Whiteshell Lake.

Due to unusually low snow conditions and unseasonably warm temperatures, no trails are currently open in the Whiteshell. However, MB Conservation, as well as our dedicated volunteers have been doing everything possible to get ready for the season so we can be riding the trails as soon as Mother Nature allows us.

Following a very successful fundraising drive last year, we are proud to report that the construction of the new Zubek Lake shelter has commenced and should be completed before the end of this season. Thank you to the volunteers who are helping to build it, and we will hopefully have pictures of the progress online shortly.

Another great addition to the club this year are two new rescue sleighs located at Big Whiteshell and Beauchemin lakes, thus taking the total number of sleighs up to seven. Please visit our Trail Map page to view the locations of all of the sleighs.

Please ride safe, and keep wishing for colder weather and more snow.

Regards,

Brian Milne
